Everything, for the Mac
Everything is the file search tool many Windows users can’t live without, and it has no Mac version. Oil Find rebuilds the idea for macOS: an in-memory index of every file name on your disk. Press ⇧⌘F and results appear as you type.
What’s the same
- It searches file names only, never file contents, which is why it’s fast: 850,000 files in under 10 ms per keystroke.
- The index follows along as files are created, renamed and deleted.
- Wildcards, regular expressions, and filters by kind, size and date.
- External drives are searchable as soon as you plug them in.
What’s made for the Mac
- A native app: a panel in the middle of the screen, full keyboard control, Quick Look with Space, and drag and drop into other apps.
- Pinyin initials and full pinyin for Chinese file names.
- Dependency folders, app internals and system folders are left out by default for cleaner results. Turn them on in Settings when you need them.
- Open source under the MIT license.
How it differs from Spotlight
Spotlight searches file contents, apps and the web at once, so results are many and their order is hard to predict. Oil Find finds files by name only, keeps its own in-memory index and answers every keystroke in under 10 ms, with pinyin initials, wildcards and regex.
