How it differs from SpotlightSpotlight searches file contents, apps and the web at once, so results are many and their order is hard to predict. Oil Find finds files by name only, keeps its own in-memory index and answers every keystroke in under 10 ms, with pinyin initials, wildcards and regex.
Everything for MacIt works like Everything on Windows: an index of every file name on your disk, with results as you type. Everything is Windows-only; Oil Find is a native Mac app. Opening it the first timeThe app isn’t notarized by Apple yet. If macOS blocks it, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click “Open Anyway” at the bottom. Once is enough.
Open sourceThe free version’s code is on GitHub under the MIT license. Issues and pull requests are welcome. Pro features are not open source.
Full Disk AccessOptional. Without it, Mail and other apps’ data can’t be searched.
PrivacyThe free version indexes file names only, never file contents, and Pro reads images and documents entirely on your Mac. The index stays on this Mac. Oil Find checks for updates once a day and only reads version info.
